Russıa announces Campaign “Wrestling! To be Continued… “
Launched in Moscow, Kaliningrad, Cheboksary and Kyzyl in April
International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) has officially announced its decision to celebrate World Wrestling Month. The Russian leg of the global campaign, entitled “Wrestling! To be continued … “, was launched on April 6 in four cities: Moscow, Kaliningrad, Cheboksary and Kyzyl.
In Moscow, at the Sports Palace named after Ivan Yarygin located in the south-eastern part of the capital, the National Youth Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling took place bringing together the teams from the record number of 69 regions of the country.
“Given the importance of the tournament, which was a qualifier for the World and European Championships, we decided not to take any vast initiatives featuring wrestlers, but made full use of the official visual identity of the campaign in the décor of the venue. The participants of this championship are the generation that will reach its full potential by the 2020 Olympics”, said Victor Mamiashvili, Vice-president of Wrestling Federation of Russia.
He added, “Believe me, Russia has some very talented young wrestlers rising up. For most of them, the sport has become an alternative to the street, and the Olympics – a life goal. For this reason, talks about the need to keep wrestling in the Olympic program never halted in the room”.
In Cheboksary an initiative in support of the Olympic wrestling became the highlight of the tournament in memory of Vasily Chapaev.
“Wrestling in the Chuvash Republic is one of the priority sports, and among the most popular ones, so the news about the IOC Executive Board’s decision not to recommend wrestling for the program of the 2020 Olympics became a major focus of public attention here,” said Pavel Semenov, Deputy Minister for Agriculture of Russia and one of the organizers of the event.
“We saw “Save Olympic Wrestling” campaign embrace the whole world in a matter of days,” he added. “Legendary athletes, prominent politicians and cultural figures backed the sport to stay on Olympic program. And here, at the tournament in memory of Vasily Chapaev, which gathered more than 200 athletes from 12 regions of the Russian Federation, Chuvashia joined the campaign.”
In Kaliningrad the initiative attracted international participants at the youth tournament for prizes of Andrei Shumilin, where more than 500 athletes from 10 countries hit the mat to express their position. The young wrestlers were supported by President of Wrestling Federation of Russia Mikhail Mamiashvili and Head of FILA’s anti-crisis working group George Brusov.
“More than 3,000 children do wrestling in the region, and we have great traditions in it. I am very concerned about my sport, about people who have dedicated their lives to wrestling, about the boys who will be at their peak just by the time of the 2020 Olympics,” said Andrei Shumilin.
“I am sure that the new head of FILA Nenad Lalovic with the support of Alexander Karelin, Mikhail Mamiashvili and other famous wrestlers will introduce all necessary reforms so that wrestling can be kept in the Olympic program,” he added. “Hopefully, in addition to TV ratings, the IOC will take into consideration the social importance of the sport and its role in the harmonious education of young people.”
In Kyzyl, the hero of the recent European Championships Opan Sat won the tournament for prizes of the Head of Tyva Republic Sholban Kara-ool. The wrestler competed in a singlet with the label “Save Olympic Wrestling” and became one of organizers of the initiative attended by over 300 people.
“Wrestling made me an athlete, an individual, set me in life, helped find friends, taught good things,” he said about the sport. “ And we just have to do everything we can to keep it Olympic !”
