Second-ranked Saleev reversed a World Cup loss to No.1 Rafik HUSEYNOV (AZE) in the gold medal final at Heydar Aliev Arena in Baku to move ahead of the hometown hero at 80kg.

Chakvetadze, meanwhile, hammered out a win over defending European champion Zhan BELENYUK (UKR) at 85kg to leap from No.10 to the top of the heap ahead of Belenyuk and reigning world champion Melonin NOUMONVI (FRA), who grabbed a bronze medal at 98kg.

Meanwhile, in addition to the two new No.1’s, Rasul CHUNAYEV (AZE) overcame a slow start with Europe’s under-23 champion Daniel CATARAGA (MDA) to notch four wins for the Games’ crown and hold onto the No.1 ranking he earned in March following Azerbaijan’s World Cup triumph.

Elvin MURSALIEV (AZE), a world bronze medalist like Chunayev, was the only other local favorite to strike gold with a win over U23 champion Viktor NEMES (SRB) at 75kg. The win lifted Mursaliev to No.4, where he sits behind world champions KIM Hyeon-Woo (KOR), Arsen JULFALAKYAN (ARM) and Roman VLASOV (RUS).

CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (July 7) – Magomedrasul GAZIMAGOMEDOV (RUS) and Khetag GAZUMOV (AZE) bumped off top-ranked wrestlers at the European Games and moved to No.1 in their respective weight categories in the United World Wrestling rankings for freestyle.

Medved Prizes winner Gazimagomedov edged No.2 Magomedmurad GADZHIEV (POL), 2-1, in the 70kg final in Baku to vault from 13th to the top of the poll as 2014 world champion Khetik TSABOLOV (RUS) appears to have migrated to 74kg where he has made two appearances in 2015.

Meanwhile, world and European silver medalist Gazumov reversed two losses last year to No.1 Abdusalam GADISOV (RUS) with a late takedown in the semifinals at 97kg and leap-frogged over the world champ to the top of the rankings.

The July rankings also see a “new” No.1 at 74kg as Jordan BURROUGHS (USA) regains the position as top welterweight.  Burroughs owned the position in 2013 and 2014 until being replaced by Denis TSARGUSH (RUS) following a loss in the semifinals of the world meet in Tashkent.

Tsargush, however, was tripped up in the Russian nationals and did not appear in Baku, leaving two-time European defending champion Aniuar GEDUEV (RUS) to claim a third straight continental crown and No.2 in the rankings behind Burroughs.

With the European Games the marquee event on the wrestling calendar in June, much of the movement in the rankings was based on results at Heydar Aliev Arena. For some entries, the Games were their first major competition of the year, resulting in some big jumps up the polls.

Three wrestlers at the inaugural Games – Russians Aleksander BOGOMOEV (61kg) and Abdulrashid SADULAEV (86kg) as well as Taha AKGUL (125kg) of Turkey – rolled predictably to gold medals in Baku as they further cemented their positions at the top of their categories.

57kg – Yarygin Grand Prix winner Viktor LEBEDEV (RUS) bagged his first continental triumph at the European Games and climbed to No.2 in the rankings, while Sezer AKGUL (TUR) leapt five places to No.7 with a bronze medal from Baku.

World silver medalist Vladimir KHINCHEGASHVILI (GEO) and Vladislav ANDREEV (BLR) dropped to 10th and 14th, respectively, after being disqualified for exchanging blows during the semifinals in Baku and were not placed.

7. Sezer AKGUL (TUR) – Yasar Dogu No.2 (No.12)

61kg – Aleksander BOGOMOEV (RUS) keeps rolling at 61kg with a triumph at the European Games, winning his sixth straight tourney title since the 2014 world championships to tighten his grip on the No.1 ranking.

Nachyin KUULAR (RUS), the silver medal winner at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, wrapped up the European junior title at 60kg to earn No.12 in the rankings.

10. Muenir Recep AKTAS (TUR) – Yasar Dogu No.2 (14)

65kg – London 2012 gold medalist Togrul ASGAROV (AZE) vaulted 11 places to No.6 in the rankings with his victory at the European Games, while runner-up Frank CHAMIZO (ITA) climbed from 10th to No.7.

9. Mustafa KAYA (TUR) – Euro Games No.3 (9)

70kg – Medved Prizes winner Magomedrasul GAZIMAGOMEDOV (RUS) won the European Games, defeating second-ranked Magomedmurad GADZHIEV (POL) 2-1 in the final, to vault from No.13 to No.1.

3. Yakup GOR (TUR) – Euro Games No.3 (3)

74kg – Aniuar GEDUEV (RUS) won the European title for a third straight year in Baku and rejoins the rankings at No.2 after slipping out of the top 20 in May.  World champion at 70kg Khetik TSABOLOV (RUS) also joins the rankings at No.9.

5. Soner DEMIRTAS (TUR) – Euro Games No.2 (12)

86kg – Piotr IANULOV (MDA) shut out European U23 titlist Aleksandr HUSHTYN (BLR) in the round of 16 and former world bronze medalist Istvan VEREB (HUN) in the quarterfinals on his way to a silver medal at the European Games and No.8 in the rankings.

18. Selim YASAR (TUR) – World No.3 (11)

97kg – Khetag GAZUMOV (AZE) slipped in for a late takedown in the semifinals of the European Games to reverse a pair of losses to Abdusalam GADISOV (RUS), 4-2, at last year’s European and world championships to claim the top ranking at 97kg.

15. Ibragim BOLUKBASI (TUR) – Euro Games No.9 (nr)

125kg – World and European champion Taha AKGUL (TUR) recorded a pair of falls and did not allow a point in four wins for the gold medal in Baku to remain top-ranked.

Meanwhile, former world bronze medalists Geno PETRIASHVILI (GEO) and Jamalladin MAGOMEDOV (AZE) bagged the bronze medals in Baku to vault to No.5 and No.6 in the rankings, respectively.

  1. 5.   Taha AKGUL (TUR) – Euro Games No.1 (1)
